Neck Swellings Indications

Most common neck swellings in Indian population is enlarged lymph nodes.These are secondary to infection which gradually subside with medication. Persistent slow growing lymph node in neck is most commonly due to tuberculosis. Cysts in neck can also present as soft swelling. Most common of these are Thyro-glossal cyst which is present in midline. Bronchogenic cyst is present in side of neck.These cysts can enlarge in size and cause problems in future. Other rare swelling can be metastatic lymph nodes in neck.FNAC can confirm diagnosis. Lymphomas can also present with enlarged lymph nodes. Biopsy is generally done to confirm. There are wide variety of lumps that can arise from various parts of neck like schwannoma, lipoma, para-ganglioma, carotid body tumor, sarcoma etc which require appropriate evaluation and management.

Preparation for Neck Swellings

Persistent slow growing lymph node in neck is most commonly due to tuberculosis in India.These patients are assessed with FNAC, ultrasound scan.If suspicion is high of tuberculosis , lymph node biopsy is recommended to confirm diagnosis, AFB culture and sensitivity for appropriate treatment. These patients are put on ATT(Tuberculous treatment) for 6 to 9 months.
